Dietary And Lifestyle Changes For A Healthier Liver

Your liver is important to the overall function of your body. In order to prevent it from becoming damaged or diseased or to help it once it has become ill, you may need to make some lifestyle and dietary changes.

Your liver is responsible for more than 500 important bodily functions.  It can cleanse your blood and filter the food and beverages you drink.  If you don’t take care of your liver, it may not be working properly and other health issues may arise.

It’s important to speak to your doctor about his or her dietary and lifestyle recommendations before starting a new plan


It is extremely important that you make sure you are getting essential vitamins and minerals.  Antioxidants are vital to your liver.  You should be eating a healthy well balanced diet that is within keeping with the food pyramid. 

Exercising at least three to five days during the week is also a wise move.  Exercise isn’t just important for your weight, although obesity can affect your liver health.  It’s also important for your overall health.  People who exercise regularly, even if it is just 20 to 30 minutes of moderate walking or other exercise, tend to live longer, healthier lives. 

Avoid smoking tobacco cigarettes and avoid alcohol all together if at all possible.  If you must drink, try not to have more than three drinks a week.  Smoking is never good and the toxins which attack your body when you smoke stick with you for several months, even after your last cigarette. 

Coffee may help lower the risk of cirrhosis.  If you drink between one and three cups of coffee a day, you should be okay, but don’t exceed three cups as this can have the opposite effect.

You can also take antioxidant supplements if you are concerned that you are not getting enough antioxidants in the food you eat. 

Elevated iron levels is associated with cirrhosis, which is a type of liver disease, so it’s important to keep controlled levels of iron.  Red meats, liver and iron-fortified cereals should be avoided.

Milk thistle is an excellent herbal supplement for liver issues.  There are also a number of other herbal supplements which may be rather beneficial to you and your liver.  Visit your local health food store for further information, but make sure that you are not mixing medications with supplements that shouldn’t be mixed. 

Vitamin B-1 is excellent for your liver.  It binds to iron, which helps to reduce the iron in your liver.  There is a possibility that it can be helpful in patients who have hepatitis B.  Pork is high in Vitamin B, but you can also get it by eating dried fortified cereals, oatmeal, corn, nuts, cauliflower, sunflower seeds and vitamins.
