Mononucleosis, more commonly referred to as Mono, can sometimes cause an individual to contract hepatitis. Typically hepatitis is mild when contracted from mono.
It can pose some health risks and in some cases, may become a very serious symptom of mono. Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver. The three types of hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.
Hepatitis symptoms and mononucleosis symptoms are very similar
Hepatitis A is an infection which is spread through the consumption of contaminated food and water. In some rare occasions, it is confused with mono.
Hepatitis B is an infection which is spread through unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected individual or through use of dirty needles, blood transfusions and organ transplants.
Hepatitis C is an infection which is spread through unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected individual or through blood exposure. It can be chronic and may be spread to an infected individual’s spouse or offspring.
Some symptoms of hepatitis include:
Approximately 90 % of individuals who are diagnosed with mono, are also diagnosed with hepatitis. Mono causes inflammation of the liver in approximately 1 of every 10 individuals. When someone gets hepatitis from mono, this virus is caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus, which is the same virus that causes mono. When chronic hepatitis occurs with mono, the virus cannot be spread to the infected individual’s spouse or offspring.
Hepatitis can be diagnosed through a physical examination performed by your doctor. Lab tests may also be conducted. These tests include liver function tests and a variety of blood and urine tests. A liver biopsy may be conducted in order to determine if there has been damage done to the liver.
Usually, the best course of action is to let the illness take its course, however, the older the patient is, the worse the symptoms will be for them and the longer the person may be infected. Your doctor may be able to prescribe you some medications to help relieve these symptoms.
Unfortunately, the best course of treatment for mono and hepatitis is to get as much bed rest as you can. As an adult, I contracted mono and hepatitis and needed to go to work. I had already missed so much work and had been seriously ill for over five months. My throat was so swollen that they thought I may have throat cancer. The doctor was able to give me steroids and other medication to ease my symptoms so that I was able to return to work.
