Liver disease is a broad subject and it can be scary. There are some types of liver disease which can prevented, whereas other types cannot be prevented.
If you or your doctor feels that you may have liver disease, this may be an extremely fearful time for you. Your liver is a vital organ in your body and it’s responsible for so much of your body’s processes.
Your healthcare physician can determine whether or not you have a type of liver disease
Your current symptoms, medical history and a physical examination will help in determining whether or not you have a form of liver disease. Some things your doctor may look for are Hepatomegaly, an enlarged liver, a firm liver or other signs of liver disease. Further tests will support a more accurate diagnosis.
Series of blood tests will be performed:
Sometimes a doctor will have to do a liver biopsy in order to truly diagnosis liver disease (if other tests and examinations are inconclusive). A liver biopsy is a procedure in which a tiny piece of the liver tissue is removed for examination under a microscope in the laboratory. In some cases, a liver biopsy will have to be done repeatedly.
There are some long-term affects for sufferers of liver disease. Long-term affect is dependent on the type of liver disease the individual has been diagnosed with.
Chronic hepatitis may lead to cirrhosis of the liver, liver failure and illnesses in other parts of the body, such as kidney damage or low blood count. Other long-term effects may include gastrointestinal bleeding, which includes esophageal varices (abnormally enlarged veins in the esophagus or stomach), encephalopathy (deteriorating brain function, which may lead to a coma), peptic ulcers (erosion of the stomach lining) or liver cancer.
Liver disease is very serious and so it’s important to keep your doctor’s appointments and to follow your doctor’s recommendations.
