Liver Disease And Abdominal Discomfort: Why Does It Happen And How Can You Counteract It?

One of the main complaints of patients who have been diagnosed with some form of liver disease is abdominal discomfort or pain. Patients who are diagnosed with hepatitis may particularly experience liver pain.

If you are suffering from chronic hepatitis, you may experience chronic pain or discomfort above the liver site.  Some people do not experience pain at all, however, they experience a vague sense of “fullness”.

There are many different causes of liver pain associated with liver disease

Patients who experience pain in the upper right quadrant typically experience this pain due to the acute stages of liver disease.  This can be described as inflammation of the liver which lasts for more than six months.  Typically speaking, your liver is not tender unless under these circumstances.

The pear-shaped organ above your liver is called your gallbladder.  The main function of your gallbladder is to store and concentrate bile, which is a bitter greenish or sometimes yellowish mixture of acids, salts and other substances. Gallstones can sometimes occur in the gallbladder and they often occur in individuals who have been diagnosed with liver disease, particularly individuals diagnosed with cirrhosis.
An abdominal sonogram is how gallstones are normally discovered.  Other risk facts include gender (females tend to be at higher risk), obesity, family history, multiple pregnancies, biliary tract narrowing and rapid weight loss.  Typically, people who experience pain from gallstones have discomfort or pain in the upper right quadrant, which may last anywhere from half an hour to six hours before the individual feels any relief.  The pain is typically recurrent and is usually severe.  It also sometimes radiates to the shoulder or back and is typically accompanied by nausea and/or vomiting.

Patients who have been diagnosed with liver cancer also experience pain in the upper right quadrant.  If you have a history of hepatitis B or C or you have cirrhosis due to liver disease, you are at a much higher risk for developing liver cancer.  It is one of the most common cancers in the world.  It most frequently develops in Asia and Africa.  Statistics show that more and more individuals are being diagnosed with liver cancer in the United States and that rate increases annually.

Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and other stomach disorders may also cause abdominal discomfort or pain.  Gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach lining, may also occur.  This will also cause abdominal pain in some individuals.  Your doctor can perform a variety of tests to determine if you have a stomach disorder.
